Discover an eye-catching Joy-Con charger that’ll capture your attention in our HyperX ChargePlay Quad 2 review!

Joy-Con chargers are a dime a dozen – with so many different designs on the market from a variety of brands, it can be challenging to know where to start. But every now and then a particular design comes along that’s so eye-catching you just can’t help but snap to attention. That’s exactly what I experienced the first time I laid eyes upon the HyperX ChargePlay Quad 2.

Although not produced by The Pokemon Company, the HyperX ChargePlay Quad 2 features a distinct red and white spherical design, strikingly similar to that of the iconic Pokeball. And with the ability to charge four Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons at once, it could just be the ideal accessory. But does its practicality hold up to its adorable aesthetic? Find out more in our HyperX ChargePlay Quad 2 review.

HyperX ChargePlay Quad 2 Review – Design

Unless you’ve never played a Pokémon game in your life, it should be immediately obvious that the HyperX ChargePlay Quad 2 is designed specifically with Pokemon fans in mind. The Joy-Con charger is essentially a half-Pokéball, sitting flat with a rounded top and allowing four Joy-Cons to be easily slotted into each quarter of the ball. Although not obvious from these images, it’s incredibly sturdy and features a heavy, rubber-coated base to prevent it from moving or slipping.

Joy-Cons satisfyingly slot in, feeling secure and held in place while they charge. And as an added touch, each quadrant of the HyperX ChargePlay Quad 2 lights up, indicating that the Joy-Con is successfully charging. It’s an incredibly aesthetically-pleasing design that would feel right at home in any Nintendo Switch collection.

HyperX ChargePlay Quad 2 Review – Practicality

Being able to charge four Joy-Cons simultaneously (potentially even an additional two if you plug them directly into your Nintendo Switch) could be a game-changer for multiplayer fans. Although I personally don’t find myself in many situations where the Joy-Cons run flat, the convenience of popping them into this charging station makes it simple to ensure they’re charged and ready to go for any long multiplayer sessions.

The HyperX ChargePlay Quad 2 also plugs in easily to the side of your Nintendo Switch, connecting via a USB-C to USB-A cord that comes bundled with the device. It’s an incredibly simple and fool proof design, with a cord that’s long enough to ensure you can position the Joy-Con charger pretty much wherever you want.

HyperX ChargePlay Quad 2 Review – Pros and (Joy) Cons

There’s only one ever so slight downside to the design of this Joy-Con and that’s the rubber base. While it does allow an incredibly handy non-slip design, it’s also exceptionally good at accumulating any sort of dust on the surface, which will adhere quite easily. This will mean you’ll have to pay close attention to dusting your TV unit regularly (which is actually not such a bad thing after all).

If you’ve got adequate space in your setup, there’s really no significant downside to the HyperX ChargePlay Quad 2. But if you’re cramped for space and don’t have much shelving or desk real-estate, this Joy-Con charger does tend to be a little bit bulky and you may be better off considering smaller, more sleek options instead.

Conclusion

There’s no denying that the HyperX ChargePlay Quad 2 is one of the most visually pleasing Nintendo Switch Joy-Con chargers on the market. And thankfully it’s got more than just design on its side! This handy Pokéball will quickly charge four Joy-Cons at once and is suited to most setups, sporting a simple yet sturdy design. So if you’re planning some multiplayer mayhem and want to ensure your Joy-Cons don’t run out of juice, then the HyperX ChargePlay Quad 2 could be the perfect choice for your setup.

So, why should you buy the HyperX ChargePlay Quad 2?

  • You’re a Pokémon fan and want a charger to suit your setup
  • Sturdy build and design that overall feels quite quality
  • Convenient design allowing 4 Joy-Cons to charge simultaneously
  • You play lots of multiplayer with several Joy-Con sets

But why shouldn’t you buy the HyperX ChargePlay Quad 2?

  • Not a Pokémon fan? You’d probably prefer a different charger
  • Your setup has minimal space for items like this
  • You only ever play with a single pair of Joy-Cons
